Proposal for the Measurement of Bell-like Correlations from Continuous Variables
We show theoretically that Bell-type correlations can be observed between
continuous variable measurements performed on a parametric source. An auxiliary
measurement, performed on the detection environment, negates the possibility of
constructing a local realistic description of these correlations
Entanglement swapping using continuous variables
We investigate the efficacy with which entanglement can be teleported using a
continuous measurement scheme. We show that by using the correct gain for the
classical channel the degree of violation of locality that can be demonstrated
(using a CH type inequality) is {\it not} a function of the level of
entanglement squeezing used in the teleportation. This is possible because a
gain condition can always be choosen such that passage through the teleporter
is equivalent to pure attenuation of the input field.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Quantum trajectories for the realistic measurement of a solid-state charge qubit
We present a new model for the continuous measurement of a coupled quantum
dot charge qubit. We model the effects of a realistic measurement, namely
adding noise to, and filtering, the current through the detector. This is
achieved by embedding the detector in an equivalent circuit for measurement.
Our aim is to describe the evolution of the qubit state conditioned on the
macroscopic output of the external circuit. We achieve this by generalizing a
recently developed quantum trajectory theory for realistic photodetectors [P.
Warszawski, H. M. Wiseman and H. Mabuchi, Phys. Rev. A_65_ 023802 (2002)] to
treat solid-state detectors. This yields stochastic equations whose (numerical)
solutions are the ``realistic quantum trajectories'' of the conditioned qubit
state. We derive our general theory in the context of a low transparency
quantum point contact. Areas of application for our theory and its relation to

Criminal narrative experience: relating emotions to offence narrative roles during crime commission
A neglected area of research within criminality has been that of the experience of the offence for the offender. The present study investigates the emotions and narrative roles that are experienced by an offender while committing a broad range of crimes and proposes a model of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE). Hypotheses were derived from the Circumplex of Emotions (Russell, 1997), Frye (1957), Narrative Theory (McAdams, 1988) and its link with Investigative Psychology (Canter, 1994). The analysis was based on 120 cases. Convicted for a variety of crimes, incarcerated criminals were interviewed and the data were subjected to Smallest Space Analysis (SSA). Four themes of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) were identified: Elated Hero, Calm Professional, Distressed Revenger and Depressed Victim in line with the recent theoretical framework posited for Narrative Offence Roles (Youngs & Canter, 2012). The theoretical implications for understanding crime on the basis of the Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) as well as practical implications are discussed
The Mach-Zehnder and the Teleporter
We suggest a self-testing teleportation configuration for photon q-bits based
on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. That is, Bob can tell how well the input
state has been teleported without knowing what that input state was. One could
imagine building a "locked" teleporter based on this configuration. The
analysis is performed for continuous variable teleportation but the arrangement

Language differences in qualitative research: is meaning lost in translation?
This article discusses challenges of language differences in qualitative research, when participants and the main researcher have the same non-English native language and the non-English data lead to an English publication. Challenges of translation are discussed from the perspective that interpretation of meaning is the core of qualitative research. As translation is also an interpretive act, meaning may get lost in the translation process. Recommendations are suggested, aiming to contribute to the best possible representation and understanding of the interpreted experiences of the participants and thereby to the validity of qualitative research
Unconditional teleportation of continuous-variable entanglement
We give a protocol and criteria for demonstrating unconditional teleportation
of continuous-variable entanglement (i.e., entanglement swapping). The initial
entangled states are produced with squeezed light and linear optics. We show
that any nonzero entanglement (any nonzero squeezing) in both of two
entanglement sources is sufficient for entanglement swapping to occur. In fact,
realization of continuous-variable entanglement swapping is possible using only

Selected bibliography for the extraction of uranium from seawater: chemical process and plant design feasibility study
A selected annotated bibliography of 521 references was prepared as a part of a feasibility study of the extraction of uranium from seawater. For the most part, these references are related to the chemical processes whereby the uranium is removed from the seawater. A companion docment contains a similar bibliography of 471 references related to oceanographic and uranium extraction plant siting considerations, although some of the references are in common. The bibliography was prepared by computer retrieval from Chemical Abstracts, Nuclear Science Abstracts, Energy Data Base, NTIS, and Oceanic Abstracts. Negotiating daughterhood and strangerhood: retrospective accounts of serial migration
Most considerations of daughtering and mothering take for granted that the subjectivities of mothers and daughters are negotiated in contexts of physical proximity throughout daughtersâ childhoods. Yet many mothers and daughters spend periods separated from each other, sometimes across national borders. Globally, an increasing number of children experience life in transnational families.
This paper examines the retrospective narratives of four women who were serial migrants as children (whose parents migrated before they did) . It focuses on their accounts of the reunion with their mothers and how these fit with the ways in which they construct their mother-daughter relationships. We take a psychosocial approach by using a psychoanalytically-informed reading of these narratives to acknowledge the complexities of the attachments produced in the context of migration and to attend to the multi-layered psychodynamics of the resulting relationships. The paper argues that serial migration positioned many of the daughters in a conflictual emotional landscape from which they had to negotiate âstrangerhoodâ in the context of sadness at leaving people to whom they were attached in order to join their mothers (or parents). As a result, many were resistant to being positioned as daughters, doing daughtering and being mothered in their new homes
Broadband teleportation
Quantum teleportation of an unknown broadband electromagnetic field is
investigated. The continuous-variable teleportation protocol by Braunstein and
Kimble [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 869 (1998)] for teleporting the quantum
state of a single mode of the electromagnetic field is generalized for the case
of a multimode field with finite bandwith. We discuss criteria for
continuous-variable teleportation with various sets of input states and apply
them to the teleportation of broadband fields. We first consider as a set of
input fields (from which an independent state preparer draws the inputs to be
teleported) arbitrary pure Gaussian states with unknown coherent amplitude
(squeezed or coherent states). This set of input states, further restricted to
an alphabet of coherent states, was used in the experiment by Furusawa {\it et
al.} [Science {\bf 282}, 706 (1998)]. It requires unit-gain teleportation for
optimizing the teleportation fidelity. In our broadband scheme, the excess
noise added through unit-gain teleportation due to the finite degree of the
squeezed-state entanglement is just twice the (entanglement) source's squeezing
spectrum for its ``quiet quadrature.'' The teleportation of one half of an
entangled state (two-mode squeezed vacuum state), i.e., ``entanglement
swapping,'' and its verification are optimized under a certain nonunit gain
condition. We will also give a broadband description of this
continuous-variable entanglement swapping based on the single-mode scheme by
